Gene Jonson and Robert Marcius bone and nickel box, circa 1970s
A conversation starter if ever there was one, this rare and unusual 1970s box features a large bone as well as a small face carved from bone. The sides of the top are covered in tessellated bone tiles. The base is nickel-plated steel, and both the top and the base are lined in luxurious chocolate-brown suede. A beautifully made piece. "Jonson + Marcius" signature etched on underside of lid.
In the early 1970s, Gene Jonson and Robert Marcius formed a partnership and supplied Bergdorf Goodman, Henri Bendel and Bloomingdale's with jewelry, and Karl Springer with accessories, furniture and sculpture. Other clients of the New York firm included Cartier and Tiffany.
Overall 10-1/4" w x 6-1/2" d x 8-3/4" h; interior of base 8-3/4" w x 5" d x 5" h.
Excellent condition; an area of minor separation of tiles on the box top, as seen in the photos; two small spots of plating loss on one side of the nickel top, not seen when lid is in place.
